The School of Nursing has established a new award in memory of the late Prof Eilís McCaughan, Professor of Cancer Care, with Dr Sharon Bingham named as its first recipient.

The focus of the ‘Prof Eilís McCaughan Cancer Care Research Memorial Award’ is for excellence in cancer care research, and it has been sponsored by one of the leading Cancer Charities in Northern Ireland, Cancer Focus NI.  The award will be presented annually to an individual working towards a postgraduate qualification of either a MSc or PhD within the School of Nursing and Institute of Nursing and Health Research.

Prof Sonja McIlfatrick, Head of School and Professor of Nursing and Palliative Care at Ulster University, explained that:

“This award celebrates the life and work of Eilís, as an esteemed colleague to many within School of Nursing and externally across the cancer care research community.  Eilís was a gifted and renowned academic in the field of cancer care, best known for her work and passion to improve the sexual health of men, and their partners, after a prostate cancer diagnosis.”

Dervilia Kernaghan, Director of Services at Cancer Focus NI added:

“We are delighted to partner with Ulster University in this prestigious award recognising the unique contribution that Prof Eilís McCaughan made to cancer care in Northern Ireland and beyond. Supporting local research has always been a strategic priority for Cancer Focus and it can greatly improve patient experience and outcomes. Having funded some of Eilís’s work over many years, we are proud to support this award. We believe this enhanced partnership with Ulster University will recognise research leadership for the future and serve as a lasting tribute to Prof McCaughan.”

Dr Sharon Bingham, who recently completed her PhD, is the first researcher to be awarded the Prof Eilís McCaughan Cancer Care Research Memorial Award and is a worthy winner. With great diligence and talent, she has been progressing Eilís’s body of research to improve the sexual wellbeing of people with cancer. As part of Dr Bingham’s PhD study she adapted and tested an eLearning resource to equip healthcare professionals to provide sexual support during routine clinical care for patients with cancer and their partners.

The award recipient, Dr Sharon Bingham and her PhD supervisor, Dr Cherith Semple, Reader in Clinical Cancer Nursing, Ulster University / South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust concluded:

“This award is a fitting legacy to the late Prof Eilís McCaughan and embodies what was close to Eilís’s heart; supporting others to progress in their career and making a difference in the lives of people impacted by cancer.

Eilís was well known to many of us, not only for pursing excellence in cancer care research but for her dedication and investment in developing and honing research skills for many within the Cancer Care Research Group, of which we are most grateful for.”
